John 4:9 Jesus was asking her to do something (give her water) and she believed she was not qualified to give it to him. Why? She was a woman She was a Samaritan She was a sinner- an outcast in her society who came to draw water alone when other women were not there to avoid them. At first, the Samaritan woman did not fully understand Jesus' meaning. Although they had never met before, Jesus revealed that he knew she'd had five husbands and was now living with a man who was not her husband. "Sir," the woman said, "you must be a prophet."
