The star was over the town of Bethlehem, but the magi decided to stop in the city of Jerusalem on the way. Herod was the King of the Jews and lived in a Jerusalem palace. The magi thought that since he was a king, surely Herod would know about the new king. The star of Bethlehem is never called by that name in the Bible. It first appears in Matthew 2:2, when the Magi (or Wise Men) from the east go to King Herod in Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
